There are about 400 species each of mammals, reptiles and amphibians. The Amazon Rainforest is home to the Pink Dolphin, also known as the Amazon River Dolphin. At over 6 feet (1.8 meters) in length, it is one of the largest freshwater dolphins on earth.
There are also many, many plants. The Amazon rainforest has nearly 40,000 plant species, ranging from tiny mosses to huge trees.
Many of the Amazon's trees are economically important, including luxury woods such as mahogany, brazil nut trees, which produce edible nuts, and oils used in cooking and beauty products.
Trees and plants also absorb huge amounts of carbon, helping to prevent dangerous climate change. It’s estimated that the Amazon’s forests store between 90 and 140 billion tonnes of carbon.
Apart from being an important local food, cupuaçu (Theobroma grandiflorum) is increasingly being used for cosmetic products like lotions, lip balms and anti-aging creams.
Despite being called the lipstick tree (Bixa orellana), you’re actually unlikely to find this exotic plant in your make-up bag. But chances are you still come across it day-to-day.
